True or False? Moving your vehicle after an accident

True or False?  In all types of car accidents, you must not move your vehicle until the police arrive. True or False with Cornerstone Insurance Brokers
False.  When in any type of accident, you may have the urge to keep everything where it is until the police arrive to investigate.  However, for most accidents, there is no need.  In minor accidents (such as fender benders), it is very important to move your car out of the line of traffic and onto the shoulder of the road. There is no need to call the police to the scene of these types of accidents, and you can report it to an Accident Reporting Centre.
For major accidents, particularly if someone is hurt, it may not be possible to move your vehicle.  If you can, put your hazards on, and wait until help arrives.
If you have any questions about what to do in an accident, contact your insurance broker.

True or False? Car insurance when driving across the border

Time to play True or False with Cornerstone InsuranceTrue or False?  If you choose to drive your car across the border into the US, you will need to purchase additional insurance coverage.

False.  Your auto policy covers you not only while you are in Ontario, but elsewhere in Canada and the US.  With regard to your accident benefits, you are covered for these throughout Canada and the US, but the restriction of being able to launch a lawsuit only if injuries exceed the threshold does not apply to accidents outside Ontario. The law that applies is the law of the jurisdiction where the accident occurred. (Source: IBC)

Renovating? Do you know to inform your insurer?

Renovating? Cornerstone has insurance information! Just as the weather starts to warm up, many homeowners turn their attention to renovation projects.  Whether you are planning a major or minor home renovation project, you may not realize your obligations with home insurance.

Did you know that you may not be covered under your home insurance policy during your renovation?

Before embarking on any home improvement, contact your insurance broker.  Your policy may need to be updated to including construction related risks which may include certain restrictions.

You may need to vacate your home for a period of time, and if vacant for more than 30 days, you are in violation of your policy. If you are going to be out of your home for an extended period of time (such as several months), you may require a vacancy permit.

Even if you are out of your home for less than 30 days, your coverage still may be affected.  Items such as exposed walls or roof construction provide risks that insurance companies will need to know about.

Also, did you know that you may be liable if a worker is injured while working on your home?  To ensure your contractors are fully covered, ask to see a Certificate of Insurance updated with your address.  This will demonstrate that they have coverage in place should a worker get injured on the job.

When your reno is finished, be sure to contact your broker again to update your policy.  Upgrades such as granite counter tops and hardwood floors will increase the value of your home, and will need to be factored into your policy to ensure you are covered if you later have a claim.

True or False? Major Renovations

Time to play True or False with Cornerstone InsuranceTrue or False? When you plan to do a major renovation on your home, you need to contact your home insurance company first.

True!  Before embarking on the renovation, contact your insurance company in advance, in order to ensure that your coverage remains in place.

The safest thing to do is contact your insurance broker to discuss your plans.  Your broker will advise you on what coverage you will need.

Tips for Dealing with Flooding

Tips for coping with home flooding - Cornerstone Insurance BrokersWe would like to extend our thoughts to those folks who are dealing with major flooding in areas of Bracebridge, Bancroft, Huntsville, and other parts of central Ontario.  One of our Insurance Companies – Farmers’ Mutual, sent along this very useful tips piece, and we would like to share it with you:

From Farmers’ Mutual:

In this time of crisis, knowing what to do in an emergency can make all the difference. Your home insurance protects you against water damage, but not in all cases. It all depends on the cause of the disaster.

Mould, Fungi and Spores are not covered by your policy if they are caused by an ongoing problem.

Urgent steps in a water damage emergency:

• Prevent Electrocution! Shut off power to all flooded areas.
• If possible, Stop the Water!
• Protect Furnishings!

DO’s…

• Do remove as much water as possible by mopping or blotting with large bath towels (Try not to leave colored towels on the carpet as colors can bleed)
• Do wipe furniture down to remove excess moisture.
• Do prop up wet furniture cushions for even drying.
• Do lift drapes off the floor, loop through coat hanger and hang from curtain rod.
• Do remove wet area rugs, furnishings and anything else on the flooring in the affected area.
• Do move valuable pictures, paintings and art objects to a safe dry place.
• Do open closet doors and dresser drawers and anything else that can be opened to allow air to circulate.
• Do stay out of rooms where the ceiling is sagging.
• Maintain records of any expenses regarding the temporary repairs to provide to your adjuster.
• Please provide a phone number(s) where you can be reached.

DON’TS…

• Don’t use your household vacuum to remove water.
• Don’t use electrical appliances while standing in wet area.
• Do not dispose of damaged items as the adjuster may want to examine them.
• Your insurance adjuster will contact you and advise you how to proceed with your claim and will explain what forms or documents will be required to complete your claim.

If you have any questions about flooding and the coverage you have in place, please contact your insurance broker.

True or False?

Time to play True or False with Cornerstone InsuranceTrue or False?  Your car insurance rates are impacted by your car’s origin (either foreign or domestic.  For example, a Toyota Camry made in Japan versus one made in Canada).

False.  Your car’s origin is one of the few factors that do not affect your rates.  Many things, such as the make and model of your vehicle (how expensive it is to replace) are all factored into your rate, as well as your driving record, but your car’s origin is not considered.

True or False?

TrueTime to play True or False with Cornerstone Insurance or False?  The number one type of claim against homeowner policies in Canada is water damage.

True!  Once upon a time, this was fire damage, but water damage has now surpassed this to become the most common claim against a homeowner policy.  The Insurance Bureau of Canada estimates that water damage causes Canadian insurance companies more than $1.7 billion annually.  (Source: Insurance Business).

Buying a car? Here’s some things to keep in mind

Factors for insurance by CornerstonePlanning on buying a car?  Consider your insurance.

With warmer weather in the air (or at least the promise of it), the roads are beckoning.  It’s also the time of year that many of us consider purchasing a new vehicle.  When purchasing a new (or new-to-you) vehicle, here are some insurance considerations.

Factors that may affect your insurance premium:

  • The make and model of your vehicle.  Generally, the more expensive the vehicle, the more insurance you’ll pay, but the cost of the vehicle isn’t always the only factor.  Some people might be surprised to hear that a Honda Civic has higher insurance rates than a Toyota Corolla.  Interestingly enough, Civic models are one of the most stolen cars inOntario, driving up insurance rates for that type of vehicle.
  • Where you live and drive your car, because more accidents happen in large metropolitan areas than in smaller towns.
  • Your age, marital situation, and in some situations, your gender.
  • Your driving record.
  • Your insurance claim record (including any speeding tickets that you would have received).  As a general rule, insurance companies consider claims experience in the last six years.
  • Your level of driving experience.
  • Whether you drive your vehicle for pleasure, commuting or everyday business (more driving time means more potential for accidents).
  • The insurance coverage and deductible you select.

Factors that will not affect your insurance premium:

  • The colour of your new vehicle (many believe that a ‘red’ car will mean higher premiums, but that is not the case).
  • Previous parking tickets.
  • Your overall health.

True or False?

Time to play True or False with Cornerstone InsuranceTrue or False? Cheaper cars always cost less to insure and luxury cars more

False.  While generally more expensive vehicles are more costly to insure, this is not always the case.  Your insurance premium includes several factors such as the price of the car, repair costs, theft frequency and its previous claims history. When these factors are combined, a cheaper car could cost more to insure than much more expensive model.
