True or False?

Time to play True or False with Cornerstone InsuranceTrue or False?  If you post you are going on vacation to your Facebook/Twitter/social media accounts, and your house is robbed while you are away, you are exempt from being able to claim this through your home insurance.

False.  Some folks may worry that they have somehow invalidated their home insurance policy if they have advertised that they are away.  Fortunately, this is untrue.  You can claim theft of your property through your home insurance (adhering to, of course, all policy limits which are explained in detail in your policy), regardless of if you had announced your vacation on a social media platform. That said, you should be very careful what you say on Facebook, Twitter, and all other social media outlets.  Never announce when you’ll be away from home, as you never know who’s watching!  Save the vacation updates for after you return.

True or False?

Time to play True or False with Cornerstone InsuranceTrue or False?  You should insure your home for its resale value.

False!  You should insure for your home’s replacement value, not resale value.  Resale value differs greatly from replacement value, as it factors in location, land value, and the resale value of neighbouring homes.  The replacement value is what you would pay to rebuild if your home were to be destroyed and includes the cost of debris removal and clean up as well as increased cost of materials and services which often have to be special ordered on a rebuild.

Very often, the resale value of your home is going to be valued at higher than the replacement value (particularly if you live in high demand areas, such as Toronto or Vancouver).  Insuring for resale will mean that you’ll pay more than necessary for home insurance.

Cornerstone Insurance Brokers is a leading insurance brokerage serving clients all across Ontario.  With locations in Woodbridge/Vaughan, Markham and Barrie, Cornerstone Insurance Brokers provides home, auto, motorcycle, business, life, and health insurance and group benefits.

True or False?

True or False?  You’ll pay less for car insurance if you work from home.  Time to play True or False with Cornerstone Insurance

Generally speaking, this is true.  The more you use your vehicle, the more chance you have to get into an accident and make a claim.  As such, if you work from home (or are a stay at home parent), you will be charged less for your car insurance than if you drove to work.  This is assuming that you do not use your vehicle for business purposes, of course. There are some situations where you may pay slightly less for insurance if you work a small distance from home – even less than if you work from home. Those cases are relatively rare, but do factor in to insurance rates.

If you’re lucky enough to avoid the daily commute, be sure to let your insurance broker know, as you could receive a nice discount on your insurance rates.

Cornerstone Insurance Brokers is proud to provide home, auto, and business insurance coverage in Woodbridge, Vaughan, Markham, Barrie, and all over the GTA in Ontario.  Cornerstone also provides life and health insurance, as well as employee group benefits.

It’s Vacation Time! Are You Ready?

Tips for your home insurance while away by Cornerstone

Tis the season for packing sunscreen and Hawaiian shirts!  It’s a time to refresh and recharge somewhere nice and sunny, or if you’re so inclined, on the ski slopes.  It’s also a time when you’re not thinking about certain things.

Like insurance.

As a homeowner, it is very important to understand your insurance responsibilities if you are away from your home for more than four days at a time (and most travel plans, particularly for winter getaways, are for more than four days).

Homeowners must take steps to ensure your insurance policy remains in force.  These steps can include:

  • Having a competent person drop by on a daily basis to check out your home.  This includes taking in the mail and any flyers that may have collected, and having a look around to make sure everything is in check (no water damage, leaky pipes, break-ins, etc).
  • Consider draining ‘domestic water containers’, such as the hot water tank.  While this is not always necessary, it is a great step for those of us who live in very cold and remote places, where freezing pipes create an issue.

Here are some other tips homeowners should take before a trip:

  • Take theft precautions.  Use timers on lights that stagger start times each day so it appears that someone is home.  Close all window coverings and ensure all doors are locked.
  • Do not advertise a trip on social media.  Leave the Facebook and Twitter updates for when you return – not before.  Would be thieves will often troll social media sites for this kind of information.

Consider adding central-monitored security system, which in addition to peace of mind, provides a discount on home insurance.

True or False?

True or False?  The type of piping in your home can affect your insurance rates. Time to play True or False with Cornerstone Insurance

Believe it or not, the answer is true!

If you have copper or plastic pipes in your home, you’ll typically pay less for home insurance than lead or galvanized pipes.  These types of pipes are older and have an increased likelihood of plumbing problems such as leaking.  As a result, you’ll pay more for insurance for these types of pipes.

True or False?

It’s time for True or False Wednesday!  Time to play True or False with Cornerstone Insurance

Today’s question:  A ticket for cell phone use while driving (while costly and unfortunate) will not affect your insurance rates.

False!  Many may think that because this is not actually a speeding ticket, it won’t affect our rates.
Using your cell phone while behind the wheel (in addition to being incredibly dangerous) may result in a moving violation ticket.  This type of ticket has the same impact as a speeding ticket, and has the potential to affect your insurance rates.
Forgo the texting and keeping your hands on the wheel, as you could be paying for more than the cost of the ticket.

Going on maternity leave?

Going on maternity leave? Important information from CornerstoneWelcoming a new member of your family?  About to go on maternity leave?

Whether you are about to expand your family or simply thinking about it, there are some useful insurance information you need to know.

First of all, when you are on maternity leave, insurance premiums and benefits do not change with an employee’s maternity leave status. Unless an employee decides to waive the benefit, employers are required to continue paying the same insurance premiums, and employees receive the same benefits as before taking pregnancy, parental and /or sick leave.

Secondly, be sure to let your auto insurance company know when you are taking maternity leave.  Since you’ll be driving less, you’ll receive a discount while you are off.

Congratulations on the next stage!

True or False?

Cornerstone Insurance Brokers brings you True or False WednesdayTrue or False?  If your house’s roof collapses due to heavy snow, you are covered by your home insurance.

This is a nice, easy one on a very cold Wednesday afternoon, while many of us may be thinking about snow accumulation on our roof!

The answer is True.  For the most part, home insurance will cover this type of a claim, but to be certain, check with your insurance broker.

If this situation happens with your cottage, you may be out of luck.  If your cottage roof collapsed due to the weight of snow it would not be covered.  It is very important that you are clearing your cottage of accumulated snow throughout the winter, so you can prevent this type of disaster.

Your insurance representative will be happy to explain more in detail and go over the terms of your home and cottage policies.

True or False?

True or False?  Insurers don’t pay for damages caused by ‘Acts of God’.  Time to play True or False with Cornerstone Insurance

This is one of those insurance myths that have existed for years.  Many of us think that the term ‘Acts of God’ exists to determine what can and cannot be covered in our insurance policies.

The reality is that insurers often pay for claims due to natural events such as hurricanes, hailstorms, and snowstorms.

The question remains of ‘what is an Act of God’?  It turns out, it doesn’t matter.  The words ‘Act of God’ don’t actually appear anywhere on any home, auto, or commercial insurance policy in Canada.

The answer is a very loud and resounding False!
